Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will deliver the Thomas Garrigue Masaryk Lecture on Democracy on May 13th, 2008 at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. The lecture will celebrate the connections between the Czech Republic and the University, and it is intended to be a forum for discussion on the fate of small nations and the future of democracy in the contemporary world.

Albright’s visit will mark the 90th anniversary of the independence of Czechoslovakia and the special relationship between Czechs and the University. Before her address, Albright will sign copies of her latest book, Memo to the President Elect: How We Can Restore America’s Reputation and Leadership, from 2:00 to 3:30pm at the University Bookstore.

Chicago Society, the Prague Committee of the Chicago Sister Cities International Program, and the Czech government are sponsoring Albright’s visit and the events.

Stories from Iraq
Details forthcoming.

Behind the violence and decimated infrastructure plaguing modern day Iraq, Iraqi academics are struggling to preserve the universities, cultural riches, and intellectual freedom of their nation. Constantly threatened, harassed, and killed, these men and women are faced with a critical question: how can freedom of thought and academic opportunity be brought to a country that hangs in the balance? This event will feature a panel of three of Iraq’s most prominent scholars, Razzaq al-Saiedi, Dr. Behnam al-Soof, and Dr. Fathia Al-Joumaily, as they investigate the issues, obstacles, and promises in Iraq’s academic present and future.
