Race has dominated discussion in past weeks, sparking debate worldwide. But the issue of race itself extends far beyond individual stories and forms an integral part of our lives. Join Chicago Society as we begin our winter quarter by exploring this complex topic. Professor Stephan Palmie, Chair of Anthropology and Professor of Social Sciences in the College, will use recent events to say a few things about what exactly "race" might be, how it works, and so forth, in order to unsettle the kinds of commonsense assumptions that make us all (even if only unwittingly) complicit in the reproduction of racialized social worlds. The talk will last 45 minutes and be followed by a discussion with the audience. Speaker: Stephan Palmie
