Intellectual Property in the Digital Age
February 2007—On February 22, Chicago Society presented a panel discussion on copyright law entitled “Intellectual Property in the Digital Age.” This panel focused on the changing landscape of law and culture in regards to technological advances that have taken place in recent years. Professor Randy Picker of the University of Chicago's law school was a lively moderator who proved consistently entertaining and insightful as he directed questions at the panelists, who addressed the issue from very different perspectives that provided a well-informed understanding of the issue.
The panelists were Professor of History Adrian Johns, Professor of Computer Science and Public Affairs Edward W. Felten, and Creative Director and Owner of Chocolate Industries Seven Bedard. The panelists proved engaging as they discussed various topics including the Sony rootkit debacle, the history of the book press, the morality of copyright law, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and the origins of the word “pirate.” A question and answer session following the discussion between panelists allowed audience members to present their concerns over such matters as music file-sharing and the legal ramifications of preserving decades-old materials.
The event was followed by a reception in which guests enjoyed a wide array of refreshments and were able to address their questions personally to the panelists.
