“Naked Economics” Draws Overflow Crowd—Again
February 2006—On February 8th, a crowd of over 250 students and faculty members from across disciplines packed a lecture hall in the Biological Sciences Learning Center in order to attend “The World Undressed: The ‘Naked Economics’ of Global Issues.” The event, hosted by Chicago Society, featured University of Chicago faculty members Charles Wheelan—author of the popular book Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science—and Allen Sanderson.
The speakers spent most of the 90-minute time period answering questions from the audience on a variety of topics ranging from the effects of global competition on uneducated workers to the repercussions of economic change on local culture. Throughout the event, economics concentrators and English concentrators alike felt very engaged in the lively discussion. “The World Undressed” featured door prizes including an autographed copy of Freakonomics, University of Chicago paraphernalia, and iTunes gift cards. This was a follow-up to the highly successful “College Life Undressed: The ‘Naked Economics’ of Student Life” event that Chicago Society organized last year around the same time. In both instances, so many guests queued in line that some had to be turned away at the door.
With “The World Undressed,” Chicago Society continues to achieve success at its mission of developing creative venues for open dialogue and debate on important issues amongst students, faculty, and the community.
