“The Challenges of Islam and Democracy”
In recent years, many policymakers and critics have questioned whether Islam and democracy can be compatible in light of the increasing global influence of radical Islam. Anwar Ibrahim is the Former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, a moderate democracy in Southeast Asia with a largely Muslim population. On November 8, 2006, Ibrahim engaged the University of Chicago community in an active conversation on the relationship of Islam and democracy, particularly as they relate to U.S. foreign policy objectives.
This evening event was moderated by Dr. Alison Boden, Dean of Rockefeller Memorial Chapel and Senior Lecturer in the Divinity School and the College at the University of Chicago. Co-sponsored by the Norman Wait Harris Fund of the Center for International Studies.
