Democracy on Deadline: The Struggle for a Free Press
October 2006—Knowledge is power and journalists are the custodians of the public good, providing truthful information to help citizens build or preserve democratic societies. On October 30, 2007, “Democracy on a Deadline: The Struggle for a Free Press” featured a panel discussion on the struggles of the independent press followed by a free pre-release screening of the documentary film Democracy on Deadline: The Global Struggle for an Independent Press.
The panel discussion addressed the difficulty of establishing journalistic freedoms in a non- or newly-democratic society and how the press affects democratization. Panelist members included: Craig LaMay, Associate Professor in the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and author of “Journalism and the Problem of Privacy”; Amira Hass, Gaza Strip Correspondent for Ha’aretz (Israel) and the winner of the UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize; Hugh Dellios, Latin America correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and 3-time winner of the Scott Beck Award for foreign reporting; and Calvin Skaggs, Executive Producer and Director of Democracy on Deadline: The Global Struggle for an Independent Press. Elizabeth Clemens, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago, moderated the discussion.
Shedding light on the pivotal role that journalists play around the globe, the documentary follows a courageous group of reporters into the often dangerous field to show how their struggles are essential to making—and keeping—societies free. From Africa to Latin America, from the Middle East to the mainstream media in the United States, Democracy on Deadline looks at how members of the news media fulfill their common mission.
